18 CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Later that night as she showered and dressed she was still a little annoyed that Mitch had kept his job a secret from her but she was secretly happy that he liked her enough to want to spend his earnings on a painting of her.

Amanda decided to freshen up by having a nice bath, afterward she got into her favourite pyjamas with the sheep print on them. The warmth of her doona was extremely comforting and for the first time in ages she felt like everything was starting to fall into place. Amanda smiled as her eyelids drooped lower and lower and she plunged into a deep slumber.

The dream began like most of the recent dreams she’d had. Amanda was on a train, people were staring at her and pointing accusing fingers. It was awful because it felt like she couldn’t escape the situation, her clothes were unusual and she wondered if that was the reason for their obvious distaste. The purple tracksuit she was wearing seemed two sizes too small, it didn’t seem like her usual style at all.

Amanda closed her eyes to block out the unjust glares. When Amanda finally opened them again the whole carriage was immersed in darkness, it was as if she hadn’t opened her eyes at all.

Great flashes of light suddenly appeared from all angles, causing her to panic. She jumped up from the seat and bolted toward the train doors that she could only see when one of the flashes lit up the now empty carriage.

The doors wouldn’t budge, her breathing had become erratic, her eyes darting back and forth.

The flashes of light were intensifying it felt like someone was continually taking photographs of her in the pitch black of night. Amanda tried the doors again, they were beginning to budge. She looked to her left one last time and that proved to be a big mistake. A dark shadow was running along the carriage toward her. Amanda shoved her body into the doors and they gave way. The pavement felt hard and cold and a trickle of blood ran down her cheek, she watched as the doors closed upon the shadow and watched the apparition as the train removed itself from view.

The platform Amanda was lying on looked familiar, she knew she should know her whereabouts but it all looked so strange to her. The answer should have come to her but before she could think about it for too long the scene switched to one that was very different indeed. In the next sequence of events a familiar face kept looking at her, it was her Grandma’s face and she willingly ran toward her. It was wonderful for her to see a familiar face. The next thing she knew she was standing at her Grandma’s house at the foot of the stairs.

Two steps above her on the staircase, she reached for Amanda’s hand and led her up the stairs to her Mum’s old room. The door opened. The curtains were flapping against the window panes.
